Sharva is destroyer of all miseries. “Shrinati iti Sharva” means one who annihilates that is called Sharva. Being affectionate to his devotees Lord Sharva destroyes their sufferings. He turns into Sharva, if his Bhava form is worshipped.
Vedas also state the glory of this name by lovingly uttering “Namah Sharvaya”. Lord Aughardani is adapt in abolishing all calamities. Lord Shiva says in Geeta that—
There is no one equal to Lord Shambhu in eliminating distress. He is so merciful that he quickly gets melted at other’s pain. When something becomes infeasible for demigods, then Lord Neelkantha helps them to accomplish that task. As he destroys external sufferings, so he also puts an end to the ignorance, which is internally present in all living beings. Lord Gangadhar’s nature of defeating other’s pride is well-known. According to Shiva-Purana—
।When Banasura got inflated with arrogance then Lord Sharva resolved to deflate him. Lord Vamdeva alone was able to conquer the conceit of Kamdeva. Even the pride-ness of Brahma and Daksha was ruined by Lord Shambhu. False ego of sages also gets crushed by Lord’s pastimes, performed in Daruka forest. When the world was afflicted by the anger of Nrisingh, then Lord Shankar pacified it by his Virbhadra form. Then being calm and composed, Lord Hari prayed us under—
।O Lord! Whenever my mind may gets polluted by pride, then you are bound to subdue it. According to Acharya Bhaskar, this multi-dimensional world gets condensed by you at the time of annihilation. You are called Sharva because earth is your presiding deity.
In the spiritual sense, freedom from suffering of rebirth by exclusion of ignorance is true form of worship of Sharva. Lord Shankar is the only destroyer of this terrifying ignorance. Shankaracharya magnificently describes it in his Shivanand Lahri—
।O Lord Pashupate! What to speak about your vigor? O Lord Shambhu! Who else can exceed you in patience? How can other demigods achieve such resolute nature? Because when entire creation is messed up during cosmic devastation, then demigods lose their patience and sages also get frustrated, but you witness it valiantly and thus you peacefully dwell in your blissful self. Therefore you are known as Sharva.
